Small steps forward, giant leaps ahead.
(Saturday, March 20, 2010: 11:42 PM)
The EP is nearing completion. All the primary tracking is done except for keyboard parts which I'm sorry to say, I'm not working on hard enough (to be fair, I work 10-14 hr days usually). After that, the 3 song "Missing Suite" EP project will be nearing an end. This will be the piece that gets promoted to radio and television and will serve as the music bed for the initial launch of the project. Eventually, (and fairly easily) this project could be internationalized, and getting national celebrities to record the Missing Song would be, well, amazing. Anyway, has to start somewhere.

And just in time for the Missing Project, too. Some recent developments suggest this project's gestation period is over and it's time to sprout and show up in the world. Among other things, the Missing Project was asked for a formal budget from the Knight Foundation, which indicates it's advanced another step in the grant selection process. Regardless of the Knight Foundation funding, it's clear that this project is clearly a candidate for grant funding from SOME foundation. I truly believe the potential of this project warrants funding.

Great news, albeit a year later...
(Tuesday, January 26, 2010: 8:11 PM)
We just got news from the Knight News Challenge that the Missing Project has been selected to submit a detailed application for funding. The News Challenge is a $25 Million dollar, 5 year funding program to fund innovation in news distribution. We're pretty excited and will be submitting the application by the 31st, the deadline we found out about, well, yesterday!

What's been going on?!
(Friday, January 16, 2009: 2:03 AM)
That's a fine question, given that I last update the blog on 9/11. Sheesh. Fact is, I spent September in a crush to get out my latest music video - What Kind of Amazing Grace?, which launched early October. Then all of a sudden it was December, and then the New Year and then inauguration. I can't even believe how quickly time is flying.

Our top priority this quarter for the project is putting together grant and sponsorship applications to get funding to complete the project. We're out of budget, and personal resources are being jealously guarded in this crappy economy.

All that being said the vision for the project has really come together and it'll be exciting to see this project actually launch one day...

The NCMA is in trouble
(Thursday, September 11, 2008: 11:02 PM)
I saw the flares fired today from the NCMA, which has been suffering a tremendous financial crisis since the Department of Justice (of all of the departments) reneged on a contract with the NCMA to respond to Katrina. Anyway, they need help. Please donate something today.

What's Next For The Missing Project
(Tuesday, September 2, 2008: 1:02 PM)
We have a few more rounds of QA to iron out a few bugs, but for the most part, the player should be mostly functional with the demo database. The goal to this point was to have a functional demo we could use to show both the proof of concept and the final player design. However, we're still a ways away from being able to launch this project fully.

First, we need to connect with national organizations' databases. I've been in conversations with the NCMA since the Spring, and they're very supportive, but are also facing a financial crisis which has absorbed all their time and attention. I know the Missing Project will support them in the long run, and what they need right now is emergency, immediate support. Which is NOT something I can help them with at this moment.

Then there's a matter of fundraising to complete the technical implementation and support the distribution of the project. Because we've not gotten into details with the NCMA (and have thus far not been able to connect with the NCMEC), it's unknown how much engineering time it will take to properly connect the Missing Project with these databases. Also, developing an IPhone and Facebook application will also cost engineering time. We're fortunate to have access to world-class talent at way-less-than-market rates, but there's still a cost. And we're out of budget for development, so we're at kind of a standstill until we can generate additional funding.

And ain't that just how it goes...

If you can read this...
(Monday, August 25, 2008: 1:49 AM)
You're now looking at www.missingproject.org, the new home of The Missing Song and the MissingProject.org player.

W00t n Hollah!

This marks the next step in an increasingly long journey (!) to get this idea out into the world. We're out of desktop demos and onto the web with an actual, functional version. I am so psyched to see the site moved and it's now working, more or less - the player guesstimates your location (you can change it with your zipcode) and shows you images of missing persons near you. The database is a sample database of actual missing persons, but the player's not yet connected to 3rd party databases, and that's really the last (missing) piece.

Still seem to be some technical details to work out, and then we can start asking for support to finish the project. We're now out of budget and there's still a LOT to be done:

  • get integrated with external databases - this one could be $ignificant

  • integrate share functionality inside the player

  • optimize the algorithm that builds your local list

  • iPhone version, hello!

  • facebook application

  • internationalization - this is a problem outside the US, too

And more or less in that order, I suppose. Anyway, very, very grateful to the CivicActions team for getting things to this point.

The Missing Project Foundation
(Thursday, July 31, 2008: 10:54 AM)
It's official, the Missing Project Foundation is now established under the auspices of the Congressional District Program.. This means that the Missing Project is a tax-exempt project and that donations to the Project are tax-deductible. This is a keystone in the foundation of the project, which requires funding to proceed. This is awesome news.
